Phase Change Quiz Next Week

Be sure to check the Downloads on the Thayer website for the freezing point and boiling point graphs available there. For next week's quiz you have to understand that the plateaus on these graphs indicate a phase change (melting, boiling, freezing, etc.). These plateaus should not be confused with plateaus due to ambient temperatures (room temperature, freezer temperature, etc.). You should understand that temperature DOES NOT CHANGE during a phase change, and you should know how to recognize these phase changes on the graphs. Use the upper case letters at the top of the graphs to help you identify times when:
¤ only liquid is present
¤ only solid is present
¤ both liquid and solid are present
On the quiz you will be asked to identify these areas on the graph. You should be able to keep track of the phase (solid, liquid, gas, etc.) of a substance by following its temperature on a phase change graph (temperature as a function of time). Also, remember that freezing point, melting point and boiling point are characteristic properties of substances and do not depend on the amount of substance present. Please reread pages 58 and 59 in your Lab Manual and be sure that you know the answers to all of the questions based on the data we collected in the lab.
