Quiz RETAKE opportunity:
There will be a retake opportunity for all students who scored lower than a B- on the Solubility/Buoyancy Quiz. In order to qualify for this retake, you must write out definitions for all terms that you missed, and explanations for all missed questions on the original quiz. The retake is optional, but the corrections are not--no corrections = no retake. The maximum grade that you can earn on the retake is a B-. You should study from the quiz reminder that was posted last Thursday. There will be no more retakes offered this year. Spread the word. PAY ATTENTION and STUDY! The year is coming to a close much faster than you think!

Final Exam Review Guide
The Preliminary Exam Review Guide is now available on the Thayer website. Start reviewing early and eliminate stress during exam week.
Quiz Reminder:
For this quiz, know the following: Definitions for solution, solute, solvent, saturated solution, concentration and solubility. Know how to create a saturated solution and understand the technique for discovering the solubility of a substance.
Know that forces can be pushes or pulls. The weight of an object depends on gravity, gravity is a force, buoyancy is a force acting against gravity. The buoyant force is always equal to the weight of the displaced fluid (Archimedes' Principle). The buoyant force acts on objects whether they float or sink. How low a floating object sits in the fluid depends upon its density. Know how to calculate the buoyant force acting on an object.

Monday's Solubility Problem:
Remember: this problem is based on the experiment we did in class. If you use the same data table to organize your measurements and calculations, you should have an easier time calculationg the solubility of this substance. Keep in mind that the solvent IS NOT WATER. You must calculate the VOLUME of the solvent using a density proportion. If you have trouble with this problem, don't worry, we will review it in class. Before pouring a saturated solution into an evaporating dish, the mass of that dish was found to be 34.150 grams. After the solution was poured in, the mass was found to be 42.125 grams. Once the liquid was completly evaporated, the mass of the dish (plus the solute) was found to be 37.089 grams. What is the solubility of the solute in this particular solvent (the density of the solvent is 0.5 g/cc)? |

7th Grade Parent Reminder:
On Thursday, April 16, 2009, the seventh grade will host their annual science fair. The fair will be held at the Thayer Academy Middle School between 4-6pm (after sports). Each student group will be assigned a room to present their project in Power Point format. The students have been working diligently on these experiments since December and would like to share the completed projects with their family and friends.
In order to keep an organized schedule for the afternoon, please let your student’s science teacher know if you are UNABLE to attend.
Thank you,
John Hamilton (jhamilton@thayer.org,)

Quiz RETAKE Reminder
Remember: Any student scoring below a B- on the Density II Quiz is eligible to retake the quiz IF AND ONLY IF they write out all of the practice problems*, show all work and box the final answer. These practice problems should be done neatly on a piece of loose leaf paper and handed in to Mr. Hamilton no later than Wednesday, 4/15/09.
*these are the same practice problems that were available on the Thayer website prior to the quiz last week.
